Let’s face it -- creating good habits can be hard work because our current habits are just that....a daily routine, an engrained way of doing life.
People wish they were just better at changing bad habits to good ones
with good reason - positive habits make us healthier, help us get better sleep, get more done and keep our thoughts focused and our emotions balanced.
Thankfully - for all of us - forming a good habit is way more accessible than most of us think - and it starts, first and foremost, with keeping it super simple.
If you can set your mind to doing something new, and be OK with a little bit of discomfort - you can start forming the habits you want today - and take a small step towards transforming your outer and inner life.
Here’s some suggestions to get you started:
- One Habit at a Time.
Not 2. Not 10. Just one. A small step today, makes it easy to come back to tomorrow.
- A Tiny Habit.
A yoga pose. 1 minute of meditation. Starting a new conversation today.
Whatever sounds right to you, make it something basic, something personal and something almost itsy bitsy. If a minute of meditation sounds like too much, start with 30 seconds. Or 15. And then go from there.
- Once a Day.
No exceptions. No AM PM habits. Just once. After 21 days, consider expanding. But be patient - and start by building your daily practice muscle.
- Focus on Starting.
Get your butt on the yoga mat or meditation cushion.
Your marathon will come, but for now, get your sneakers laced up and your feet out the door. Life is a marathon, after all. No need to rush it.
- Enjoy Doing It.
Our minds respond to rewards. And your the one that gets to create that for you. Whether it’s positive verbal reinforcement, or simply starting with a habit you really love, we trick ourselves by focusing on our positive feedback loop - and nurturing that to grow. 70% of the average person’s daily thoughts are negative - and doing what we enjoy help us act our way into better thinking.
- Watch Your Thoughts.
Notice the self-defeating questions - Why are you doing this? Don’t you have something better to do today? - and be curious about them. No need to resist them - or they will persist. Instead, take note of them and your mind's ability to keep you stuck in the old. Stay focused and keep your eyes on the prize.
- Don’t Miss Two Straight Days.
A missed day happens - and we can overcome it. But if you miss once, be absolutely, positively sure not to miss the next time. Continuity builds muscle - be weary when you start to stray, and setting off every alarm you can to keep building the next day in the right direction.
- Be accountable.
Every habit is best formed in partnership with others. Create a team, and participate - in offering support and getting supported. Like everything, life takes a village. Habit-building is no different.
Follow these basic, digestible rules and you’ll be armed with all you need to start creating new grooves, gain new skills and form the habits you want.
If you’re ready, you can stop the same routine, and start living the life of your heart’s desire, one day, one step, one moment - and one habit - at a time. Onward, and upward.
